UD Almería veterans win big in first memorial football match for Jesús Verdejo
Murcia-based side CD Cieza visited the Anexo ground at the Power Horse Stadium. The family of the late Rojiblanco manager attended the game
The Anexo ground at the Power Horse Stadium hosted an emotional tribute to Jesus Verdejo Vivas on the occasion of his first memorial football match organised by UD Almería veterans. The family of the late Rojiblanco manager attended the game against CD Cieza and in the early stages of the match, received numerous mementos of this special day. Both teams delivered plaques, UD Almería as a Club through Mariano Blanco, secretary of the board of directors; the Almería City Council was represented by Mayoress María del Mar Vázquez, and councillors Juanjo Segura and María del Mar García Lorca.
The UD Almería veterans, who remain undefeated since the creation of this team from the initiative of the Malpica brothers Luis and Rafa, thrashed CD Cieza 8-1 with goals from Dani Albacete, Isidro, Raúl Sánchez, Alex Hita and Beltran's fine brace. The Murcia-based side scored an own goal.
Rojiblanco starters Jesús Gualda, Añoño, Isma Callejón, Pelegrina, José Conde, Dani Albacete, José Callejón, Narci, Isidro, José Ortiz and Raúl Sánchez walked out onto the pitch. Subs Sabino, Alvaro, Juan Martos, Alex Hita, Guille, Edu Fenoy, Nico, Butra, Nono, Beltrán, Moi, Nino, Pedro Garcia, Emilio, Ruben Gallardo and Ruzzo also clocked up minutes. Juan José Torres Caravaca, Miguel Montero Ruiz and Francisco Torres Caravaca were the match officials.
Jesús Verdejo joined the board of directors of UD Almería in October 2002 when Manuel García assumed the presidency. Shortly after, Alfonso García acquired the the majority of the shares and took over the ownership of the Club, also becoming president. Jesus Verdejo remained in his organisational chart. For many years, he was the first team delegate coinciding with the first promotion of UD Almería to the top flight. He was a football enthusiast and a loving man who dedicated plenty of his time to the Rojiblancos' Club and promoted the football veterans team.
