Andrés Fernández: ‘We have a fantastic match on Saturday that we want to enjoy’

The UD Almería goalkeeper highlights the importance of atmosphere at the UD Almería Stadium ahead of the game with Deportivo La Coruña

UD Almería goalkeeper Andrés Fernández spoke to the media ahead of Saturday night’s encounter against Deportivo La Coruña, underlining the importance of turning the UD Almería Stadium into a fortress.

We have a fantastic match on Saturday that we want to experience and enjoy,’ said the veteran shot-stopper, who believes the evening kick-off will help create a special atmosphere in the stands.

Assessing the first half of the season, Fernández was clear in his analysis: ‘The assessment has to be positive, but with high expectations because we can do even better. We’re currently 3rd in the table, just 2 points off the automatic promotion places. We’re approaching the second half of the season with the firm intention of improving.’

Despite UD Almería’s attacking threat, the Murcia-born goalkeeper stressed the need for greater defensive solidity. ‘We can’t keep conceding 2 goals per game like we have in recent matches. Going forward we’re doing very well and creating danger from almost any situation, but we need more control and to allow fewer chances,’ he explained.

The goalie also pointed to the competitive nature of the league and the impact of injuries. ‘Over a season there are always ups and downs, especially in a league like this where nothing can be taken for granted. We’ve seen it with our draw at Anduva or Racing Santander losing at home to a team fighting relegation like Real Zaragoza. On top of that, we’ve had numerous absences, including three injured centre-backs and that affects both matches and training because competitiveness drops.’

Now 39, Fernández reiterated his happiness in Almería and praised the squad’s mentality. ‘The commitment of the players is total,’ he said, before highlighting a telling statistic: ‘We have 36 points at this stage. Last season, Levante UD had 35 points at the halfway mark and ended up earning promotion. That’s a very significant reference.’

All attention now turns to Saturday night. ‘It’s a fantastic game and being played in the evening will help create a great atmosphere for everyone,’ Fernández concluded.
