Baba eyes emotional return: 'The day I'm told I'm playing will be very special'

The UD Almería midfielder reflects on injury recovery, gratitude and renewed optimism as he nears the end of his long injury layoff

Reporting from UD Almería's pre-season base in Marbella, midfielder Iddrisu Baba shared heartfelt reflections on his journey through injury, the mental battle of recovery, and the excitement of what's to come as he inches closer to returning to action.

The Ghanaian, sidelined since 26 November, is fast approaching a difficult anniversary, 8 months since the injury, and nearly 7 since undergoing surgery in January. Each passing day brings him closer to the ultimate goal: stepping back onto the pitch.'I don’t care if it’s in an official match or a friendly,' Baba said in an interview with the Club’s media team.

'But I don’t know how I’ll react when the gaffer tells me I’m playing. That moment will be special. I’m working hard for that surprise to come,' he added.

Sitting in the dressing room, Baba opened up with genuine emotion about the mental strength it took to come this far. He proudly bears the scar on his left knee as a symbol of what he is endured.' The first two months were horrible. I was in so much pain. Sometimes I still get flashes of the injury, but I forget them quicker now. I’m fine. I’ve left those bad memories behind and I’m focused only on the day-to-day,' he stated.

Grateful for the support he has received, Baba extended thanks to the medical team that guided him through rehabilitation. As the team rebuilds for the new campaign, he is encouraged by the energy of the squad and the experience of the new arrivals.
'The new signings might be new to UD Almería, but they’re not new to football. Most of them come from the second tier, they know what this league is about and that’s going to help us,' Baba commented.

One familiar face brings extra joy — former team-mate and Club legend Salva Sevilla, now Team Manager.
'Salva? Just seeing him makes me smile. We went through so much together at RCD Mallorca. He’s a magician, a real top player and a great person. I learned a lot from him.'

Looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, Baba remains grounded. His main focus is on progress, not pressure.' The Segunda is a long road. You have to take it day by day. There are so many factors you can’t control, he stressed.

when asked if fans will see him in pre-season action, Baba replied with a knowing smile: 'Maybe it’s too soon... but you never know.'
