The Rojiblancos recover physically and mentally before a decisive final league clash and the high-stakes promotion play-offs
UD Almería are taking a deep breath before the huge challenge that awaits on Sunday and hopefully over the following three weeks as well. After a difficult night in Gijón, where they suffered a second consecutive defeat and went 3 matches without a win, the Rojiblancos saw their hopes of automatic promotion disappear. Deportivo’s victory in Valladolid only added to the disappointment.
Now, however, UD Almería head into the final round of the regular season determined to secure third place in the table the best possible position for tackling the promotion play-offs that still offer a route back to LaLiga, albeit by the longer road.
After the scare at El Molinón stadium, where results elsewhere briefly left Rubi’s side down in fifth place, the squad are now regrouping and preparing to respond when it matters most. Monday was dedicated to recovery work, while Tuesday has been set aside as a rest day, valuable time to recharge both physically and mentally.
The first major test arrives on Sunday. Almería host Real Valladolid knowing that victory will guarantee third spot. Anything less could open the door to complete chaos — they could even miss out on the play-offs altogether.
With six teams still fighting for the four promotion spots, the permutations are endless. If Rubi’s men take care of business, they could face any of the remaining contenders in the semi-finals. The one certainty is that they would hold home advantage.
The final day promises drama, tension and unpredictability in abundance — but the real emotional rollercoaster will only just be beginning as the battle for promotion to Spanish football’s top flight enters its decisive stage.
