UD Almería end 2025 just 2 points shy of automatic promotion
The Rojiblancos’ recent slump leaves them on edge, but promotion race remains wide open
UD Almería finished 2025 just 2 points away from automatic promotion to LaLiga EA Sports, despite a disappointing run of results. After losing their last couple of matches against Burgos CF and Málaga CF and winning only one of their last 5 games, the Rojiblancos are still firmly in the hunt for promotion. However, the standings have tightened, with several rivals closing in from behind.
Following Matchday 19, Racing Santander lead the pack with 37 points, while UD Las Palmas hold second place with 34. Both UD Almería and Deportivo La Coruña are tied on 32 points, though the latter have moved ahead on goal difference. CD Castellón, who also suffered a loss over the weekend, are in close pursuit with 31 points.
The top of the table, which once seemed to be separating itself with Racing Santander, Deportivo La Coruña, UD Las Palmas and UD Almería pulling away, is now much more congested. Inconsistency has seen several teams falter, forcing the Rojiblancos to keep an eye not only on those ahead but also on those lurking just below.
Cádiz CF and Sporting Gijón are tied on 30 points, 2 behind UD Almería, while Burgos CF and AD Ceuta FC are 3 points back on 29. Recent form has seen sides like CD Castellón, Racing Santander, Málaga CF and Sporting Gijón surge up the standings, further complicating the picture at the top.
As head coach Rubi remarked ahead of the Málaga CF derby: ‘Whatever happens in Málaga, we’ll still be in the fight. After the Christmas break, the team need to restore the good vibes and the effectiveness they had in the penalty areas.’
With the promotion race still wide open, UD Almería will need to regain their form to secure a place in the top-two.
