UD Almería Women seal promotion to Segunda RFEF
SD Nueva Montaña fail to appear for the second leg after UD Almería Women’s commanding 0-4 away victory in Santander
UD Almería Women have secured long-awaited promotion to the Segunda RFEF women's tier after overcoming SD Nueva Montaña in the promotion play-off. The second leg, scheduled for Sunday at 12 noon at the Emilio Campra youth stadium, was not played after the Santander-based side failed to show up. The tie had effectively already been settled in the first leg, where the Rojiblancas cruised to a dominant 0-4 win at the Vicente Miera Municipal Stadium.
The Rojiblancas and coaching staff celebrated the achievement in style after a brilliant campaign from start to finish. Their superiority was not only evident in the play-off but throughout the entire season. UD Almería Women were one of the standout teams across all 18 groups of the Tercera RFEF women's tier, winning the Eastern Andalusia group and posting a stronger coefficient than the Western Andalusian champions.
The final league fixture was also not played after Melilla were unable to travel to Almería, although promotion had already been mathematically secured. Overall, including the first leg of the play-off, the Rojiblancas finished with 20 wins, one draw and just one defeat, scoring 99 goals and conceding only 11.
Naturally, the Indálicas would have preferred to finish the season on the pitch and celebrate promotion in front of their fans. Nevertheless, the mission has been accomplished in emphatic fashion.
Next season, UD Almería Women will compete in the Segunda RFEF, the third tier of women’s football in Spain, which is divided into 3 groups. Unless changes are made, the Andalusian side are expected to play in Group III alongside clubs from Andalusia, Extremadura and Madrid.
The Spanish Football Federation had already sent the official celebration material to the Emilio Campra youth Stadium so the champions could take the traditional winning photo. The group winners’ trophy was also displayed after it could not be presented on the final Matchday, which, like the second leg of the play-off, was never played.
Head coach Pedro López reflected on the achievement by saying: ‘What matters is not how it happened, but that we achieved our objective after a great season.’
