Édgar González: 'We defend a crest, employees, fans and a city'

The UD Almería central defender believes that returning to Villamarín will be 'special' after playing four years for Real Betis. He is eager to finish in a 'dignified' way and 'regardless of what the opponents will play for'

Édgar González will step into the Benito Villamarín Stadium for the first time as a visitor player since leaving Real Betis Balompié last season. The midfielder spent 4 years at the Sevillian club and he expressed the following: 'Without a doubt, it'll be a special game for me. I'd have liked to play there another time to be honest, but Betis gave me everything and it'll be very nice to go back there.'

The central defender has referred to this as one of the keys to the match: 'The best football atmosphere that I've seen in the Primera Division and in Europe awaits us. The fans push a lot and we've to take that into account because that makes Betis weaken you in many spells of the game.'

UD Almería more than deserved the victory in the first half of the season against Betis and Édgar expects a similar approach: 'We're two teams that want to have the ball and in the Power Horse, it was inexplicable that none of the many chances were completed and that we didn't win. If we're organised, we'll be able to beat Betis,' he pointed out to the media.

The Rojiblancos have their last four games ahead of them where, with no chance of staying up in the Primera Division, they will try to offer their best football version for numerous reasons: 'We defend a crest, some employees, fans and a city. Unfortunately, our season has already been decided but it's our job and we must play and win without thinking about whether the opponents are playing for Europe or relegation,' explained Édgar.

The 27-year-old footballer has delved into this aspect: 'The important thing is to pluck up the courage and show our grit on the pitch and defend the shirt. The situation is awful; nobody wants it. It's hard to be relegated with several games to play but we're professionals and the goal now has to be to perform at our best and defend the Club as a collective.'

In the press room at the Power Horse Stadium, Édgar reviewed his past seasons with the Béticos and also what lies ahead for UD Almería in the medium term: 'We know how hard the Segunda Division is because the competitiveness of all teams is clear. The Club's project has already gone through this top tier and the formula is also clear.'
