Chumi ‘Playing against Lewandowski or Benzema makes you a better player'
The 23-year-old central defender speaks of ‘real motivation’ in the light of the enormous challenge of playing in the first division
After four months without playing any game following an unfortunate injury, Chumi made a brief appearance last weekend during the first pre-season warm-up game against Velez CF: ‘Naturally, I hadn't done it for four months and it was special. Even if you train to the fullest, there's no nothing like having rivals in front,’ explains the 23-year-old player to the Club’s official media after 'debuting' as a right-back: ‘It's true that I haven't played in that position for many years but I'm here for whatever the head coach needs. I just want to assist wherever I can.’
Promotion to the top flight will entail giving it their all according to Chumi: ‘Since all the teams are brilliant, it’s a great excitement to face them. We’re highly motivated to compete against anyone. Playing against Lewandowski or Benzema is a real motivation. Having international top strikers forces you to become the best version of yourself and makes you a better player.’
The Laracha-born centre-back is looking forward to the start of the championship in August: ‘I haven't played in that tier yet and I'm really excited. Hopefully we'll pick up as many points as we can as soon as possible to have a season that is more or less calm.’
