Carriço, experience, leadership and strength for UD Almería

The Portuguese central defender, three-time Europa League champion with Seville FC, signs a season-long deal with the option for another

UD Almería have completed the signing of Carriço, a player who has earned his stripes and will bring bags of experience, leadership and strength to the Rojiblancos squad. The Portuguese centre-back, who has been three-time Europa League champion with Sevilla FC, is the fifth addition to the UD Almeria first team for this campaign after the signings of Juanjo Nieto, Arnau Puigmal, Curro Sánchez and Portillo. He signed a season-long deal, with the option for another 12-month extension.

Daniel Filipe Martins Carriço was born in the Portuguese town of Cascais on 4 August, 1988, so he has just turned 33 years old. He is 1,83 metres tall and began playing football at Sporting de Lisboa reaching the first team, although he was also loaned to other teams from Portugal and Cyprus until he moved to English side Reading FC in 2013. In the 2013/14 season, he began his footballing career and his most brilliant stage at Sevilla FC, first as a loan from the British club and then signing a permanent contract for the Andalusian top-flight Club. Little by little, Carriço was becoming a key player at Seville FC, then trained by head coach Unai Emery. The talented central defender wore the captain's armband and was the team leader winning the Europa Legue in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In February 2020 he reached an agreement to sign for Wuhan from the Chinese Super League, which has been his last club.

Carriço can operate as a midfielder as he used to do when he started playing for Sevilla FC and as a centre-back when head coach Unai Emery was in the driving seat. With his signing, UD Almería boost their defensive options with a competitive player who will surely provide experience and character.
