Baba returns to action after over 9-month recovery

The Ghanaian midfielder makes long-awaited comeback but rues UD Almería's defeat to current league leaders Racing de Santander

UD Almería midfielder Iddrisu Baba made his long-awaited return to action after a gruelling 9-month recovery from a serious knee injury. The Ghanaian was sidelined since 26 November, 2024, when he sustained the injury during a match against Córdoba CF.

Baba had been named in the Matchday squad list just a week ago for UD Almería’s encounter with Real Sociedad ‘B’, although he did not feature. However, head coach Rubi surprised many by including him in the starting XI against Racing de Santander, deploying him in an unfamiliar role at centre-back due to the team’s defensive shortages.

Despite the lengthy absence, Baba impressed with his performance, showcasing resilience and determination after such a long period on the treatment table.

The midfielder had been a key figure for UD Almería last season before the injury. Initially diagnosed with a grade 2 sprain of the internal lateral ligament in his left knee, further tests revealed a partial ACL tear. After undergoing surgery in January 2025, Baba embarked on a challenging recovery journey under the guidance of the Club’s medical team.

Speaking after this Sunday's match on UDA Radio, Baba admitted the defeat to Racing de Santander was disappointing, especially after the Indálicos had been leading 2-0. However, he expressed his pride in returning to the pitch and feeling like a footballer again after such a lengthy absence.
