UD Almería hit 64-goal mark in 'Spaghetti Western' shootout season
Rubi’s free-scoring side rewriting Club history with relentless attacking firepower. The Rojiblancos are not only the league top-scorers but also enjoying the most prolific campaign in the Club’s history
Goals are the lifeblood of football, the ultimate objective, the final piece of every move. And this season, UD Almería have turned scoring into an art form. With 64 goals to their name, they are not only the LaLiga Hypermotion top-scorers but also enjoying the most prolific campaign in the Club’s history after 32 matches.
'Spaguetti Western' is a style of Western films with cowboys, gunfights, duels. Almería, long associated with cinema thanks to its iconic landscapes, is now staging its own footballing 'Spaghetti Western.' Rubi’s side have become a ‘Dynamite team,’ echoing the legacy of past strikers while setting a new benchmark for attacking excellence. No previous UD Almería squad over the past two decades has come close to these numbers at this stage of the season.
Since the Club’s ownership reshaped ambitions 7 years ago, UD Almería have consistently surpassed 50 goals by Matchday 32 in Segunda with the lone exception of the 2020/21 season (48 goals).
Last season and the 2012/13 campaign both reached 55 goals at this point, still 9 fewer than the current tally. Even the promotion-winning side under former head coach Unai Emery had netted 54, while the title-winning 2021/22 team had 51, 13 fewer than today.
Goals shared across the squad
One of UD Almería’s greatest strengths is their spread of goals. Sergio Arribas leads the way with 20, but a remarkable 14 different players have found the back of the net throughout this season. Defender Álex Muñoz scored his 4th of the campaign against Real Sociedad 'B', while fellow defender Chirino has 3 recorded. Midfielder Lopy also joined the scoresheet recently, alongside deeper-lying players like Guedes and Dzôdić.
Crucially, UD Almería have failed to score in just 3 of their 32 matches, a mere 9%. Even more impressively, in 20 of their 34 games across league and Spanish Cup, they have scored 2 or more goals, close to 60%.
If this UD Almería side were a film, it would be pure action, fast-paced, explosive and impossible to ignore.
