UD Almería Under-16s 'A', who are enjoying an outstanding season, defeated the reigning Spanish Cup champs despite playing reduced to 10 men
UD Almería’s Under-16s 'A' secured an epic 3–2 victory over Real Betis Balompié U16s on Matchday 6 within Group IV of Spain’s national División de Honor. The match was played at the Francisco Pomedio Stadium in Huércal de Almería.
The Academy youngsters were reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute, with the score at 2–1. The Betis boys equalised in the 86th minute, but shortly afterwards, in the 88th minute, Viktor scored the decisive goal to seal a 3–2 victory for the hosts.
The youth team, coached this season by coach Mateo Villar, are enjoying an outstanding campaign. Indeed, they are among the leading teams in the highly competitive tier. Following their victory over Betis, the reigning Copa del Rey champions, UD Almería Under-16s 'A' ended the day in second place in the standings.
This was their first home victory of the season, having drawn one and lost one of their previous two home matches. Away from home, meanwhile, they have won all 3 of their fixtures. These results underline the Rojiblancos’ determination to challenge for one of the places that qualify teams for the Copa del Rey.
For this round of fixtures, Mateo Villar welcomed back Ramón Martos and Viktor, who had been away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland and Montenegro Under-19 national teams, respectively.
As a reminder, the top 4 teams in each group, along with the 4 best 5th-placed outfits across the 7 División de Honor groups at the end of the first half of the league season, qualify for the knockout cup competition.
UD Almería U16s 'A' who know what it takes to reach the final after finishing as runners-up in the Copa del Rey in 2023, have narrowly missed out on qualification in recent seasons. Now, they are making another attempt and so far they are on the right track.
