1-2: UD Almería snatch defeat from jaws of victory against Real Madrid CF

Ramazani put the Rojiblancos ahead, but second-half goals from Lucas Vázquez and Alaba inspired the Merengues to a season-opener win. Rubi's men held rivals to a draw for a while

The Power Horse Stadium ‘Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos’ opened its doors for opening day as UD Almeria are back in the big time. The LaLiga Santander debut for the Rojiblancos was simply fantastic against European Super Cup reigning champions Real Madrid CF. The hosts not only proved their might early on, but they also put the visitors under pressure. Head coach Rubi could not count on several players on the teamsheet because they had not been registered yet. In fact, the rock-solid defence was formed by Chumi playing as a right-back; Kaiky, Ely and Babić, centre-backs and Akieme on the left. Then, Samú Costa, Eguaras and Robertone started the game in midfield and link-up duo Ramazani and Sadiq partnered up front.

As if they had been playing in the top flight for many seasons…the home side looked on it from the off and got the breakthrough inside 6 minutes through Largie Ramazani. The Belgian fired clinically into the back of the net after a well-timed move to open the scoring (1-0). After the first goal, the Rojiblancos began to feel under pressure since the Madridistas piled forward on the attack creating big chances in a bid to equalise. After a few minutes of very high intensity, Rubi's men stood up, put in a brave fight and managed to grow back into the match.

A defensively savvy UD Almeria defence combined with keeper Fernando’s smart saves made Real Madrid CF struggle to grab a leveller. A sell-out crowd cheered on the Indalicos following their effective passing and exciting attacking play as they moved the ball forward buzzing with boundless energy.

Both teams fashioned a hatful of chances over the course of the second half. However, it was Real Madrid CF who dominated the first stages of the period. It was not until the hour mark that the Merengues got their fitting reward after fighting tooth and nail. Lucas Vázquez took advantage of a loose ball to thump it home (1-1). After the visitor's goal, Diego Sousa and Lazo came on for Sadiq and Ramazani, but Ancelotti's team continued to reign superior. With 74 minutes on the clock, Alaba, who had just stepped on the pitch, broke the deadlock (1-2) after a stunning goal from a free-kick that secured a comeback win.

UD Almería tried their very best to keep pace with their opponents as they put Curtois to the test twice, albeit Madrid’s goalie averted danger between the sticks thanks to his quick decision-making and total confidence in the closing minutes. It was a solid test, but UD Almeria were narrowly beaten by reigning LaLiga Champions Real Madrid CF on the opening day.
