LaLiga pronounces on elitist ‘Super League’ proposal

The sports association issued a press release in which it strongly condemns the announced creation of the European tournament

LaLiga has issued a press statement in which the sports association strongly condemns the recently announced creation of the European ‘Super League’ as they considered it as an elitist competition, which goes against the principles of a system based on open competition and sporting merit across Europe.

Nowadays, football fans and supporters across Europe can dream that their Club, whatever its size, has the possibility to shine and progress to compete at the elite of European football. LaLiga defends this European tradition of football within everyone’s reach. The concept proposed by 12 European Football Clubs breaks those dreams, closing the door to the top of European football, allowing entry for only a few teams to the elite.

LaLiga has a proud, 90-year history as an open, merit-based competition. Millions of fans around the world follow the 42 clubs of both LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank. The success of our competitions has contributed to football becoming a key factor to the Spanish economy, representing nearly 1,4% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and employing around 200,000 workers.

The newly proposed top European competition is nothing more than a selfish proposal designed to make the rich richer. It will certainly undermine the appeal of the whole game and have an enormously damaging impact on the near future of LaLiga, its member Clubs, and all the entire football ecosystem.

Moreover, it will also impact on other sports to which, in the 2019/20 season, LaLiga contributes more than 126m € since it endangers the contribution system approved in the Pacto de Viana agreement.

We will use all the measures at our disposal and at the same time, we will also work with all parties involved to defend and support the integrity and future of Spanish football in the best interests of the game.
