Aitor Buñuel: ‘We’re putting in huge effort into creating a solid team’

The 23-year-old right-back values the UD Almería teamwork in the pre-season and foresees the future of the team

There is more to that decider in a game that ends up marking the season. A late fine finish also counts and in Aitor Buñuel’s opinion the team’s strength is the key: ‘It’s essential to create a solid team and we’re working on that from now on. The atmosphere is great. We’re aware of the importance of that during the season and we’re working on it. Helping any team-mate on the pitch is one of the keys in order to win promotion.’ The thing is that healthy competition between players always ends up having good effects on the team: ‘I get on really well with him. He comes from having a brilliant season at Real Oviedo. There’s a lot of competition regarding all the squad positions. I always try to learn things from my team-mates and I’m pretty sure that I’ll also learn from Nieto. Both of us will surely grow next season,’ he explained to the Club’s official media when talking about one of the summer signings.

With regard to his personal expectations, the 23-year-old player expressed the following: ‘I came to UD Almería to grow as a footballer and I hope that I’ll continue growing as a player and as a person too. I’ll try to earn my place on the pitch step by step to become important and do well in Almería.’ There’s not so much time left for the 2021/22 season opener against FC Cartagena: ‘We all have already set our minds on that date. We’re eager and excited about that match in Cartagena but there’s still a lot to do. We’re understanding concepts and creating a solid team. The game is getting closer and closer and we’re looking forward to it.’

When explaining his role in the side, he explained ‘our job as wingers is double. We try not to be outmatched when defending and help the central defenders with good positioning as well, but without giving up the attack so as to have freedom. We want to dominate every aspect of the game. The good thing about having such a complete squad is that there will be alternatives when it comes to playing styles not only with good passers but also players drifting into space. Being able to plan different strategies for different matches means success.’

Finally, Buñuel analysed the two upcoming friendlies: ‘Segunda Division is very long with all kinds of games. Pulpileño and Águilas will help us to get match fit and put into practice tactical aspects because we’ll face similar types of fixtures throughout the campaign.’
